The 3D catalogue: film cases on wooden shelves, with the cat sitting at the counter next to its greeting.

The catalogue in 3D

The film shelves have a room of their own that you can walk around in. The cat behind the counter is the AI Catbot, and they pick real films from the same catalogue when you tell them what you feel like watching. Nothing is for sale, here or in there. Go in from here and this film is already out on the counter, with more like it waiting on the shelf next to it.

How it feels

This is a comedy anime special about pushy and shameless middle-aged women in Japan. It is based on a popular manga from the late 1980s that made fun of this type of person. The special shows everyday situations blown out of proportion for laughs.

What happens

Obatarian (Japanese: オバタリアン) is a yonkoma manga series by Katsuhiko Hotta. It was serialized in Manga Life, Manga Life Original, and Really Happened Pleasant Stories (all published by Takeshobo) from 1988 to 1998, with a total of 13 volumes released by the publisher (with some reprints after 2000). A one-off anime television special was produced by Sunrise and aired on TV Asahi on April 3, 1990. The title Obatarian (a portmanteau of おばさん obasan "middle-aged woman" and Battalion from the 1985 zombie comedy film The Return of the Living Dead) became a popular Japanese buzzword in the late 1980s referring to pushy, shameless, or ill-mannered middle-aged women. The series won the 1989 Bungeishunjū Manga Award. (from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA)
