What happens

Conte cruel is een Franse korte film uit 1930, geregisseerd door filmacteur Gaston Modot, en is tevens de enige film die hij ooit maakte. De film is gebaseerd op het korte verhaal La Torture par l'espérance (vertaald: De foltering door hoop), dat onderdeel was van de verhalenbundel Nouveaux contes cruels (Nieuwe wrede verhalen) uit 1888 van de schrijver Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam. De productie van de film begon op de set van Marco de Gastyne's speelfilm La merveilleuse vie de Jeanne d'Arc uit 1929, waarin Modot een rol speelde. De opnames voor zijn korte film werden tussendoor gedaan. Modot kon het budget laag houden door de historische decors, het filmmateriaal en een deel van de cast en crew van de speelfilm her te gebruiken voor zijn eigen film. Omdat de film uitkwam op het moment dat stomme films uit de mode begonnen te raken, werd het geen succes. In 2023, onderging de film een restauratie in de Cinémathèque française.
