Muhsin Ertuğrul'un Türk sinema ve tiyatrosuna getirdiği yeniliklere bir örnek sayılan film, Türkiye'de çekilen köy konulu ilk film olma özelliğini taşımaktadır. Yönetmen Muhsin Ertuğrul, bir rolde de oynadığı Aysel Bataklı Damın Kızı'nın yapımcılığını önce kendi üstlenip daha sonra İpek Film'e devretmiş, film çekildiği dönemin güncel yaşamını, gelenek ve kavramlarını işlemiştir. Senaryo, Selma Lagerlöf'ün bir hikâyesinden yola çıkarak Nâzım Hikmet tarafından yazılmış; filmin özgün müziğini Cemal Reşit Rey bestelemiştir.
