6,000 Waiting

The 3D catalogue: film cases on wooden shelves, with the cat sitting at the counter next to its greeting.

The catalogue in 3D

The film shelves have a room of their own that you can walk around in. The cat behind the counter is the AI Catbot, and they pick real films from the same catalogue when you tell them what you feel like watching. Nothing is for sale, here or in there. Go in from here and this film is already out on the counter, with more like it waiting on the shelf next to it.

What happens

6,000 Waiting is a 2021 American short documentary film written, directed, and edited by Michael Joseph McDonald. The film follows three Georgians with cerebral palsy, Ben Oxley, Nick Papadopoulos, and Noah Williams, whose lives are affected by Georgia's waiting list for Medicaid-funded home- and community-based services. The film was produced through the Storytelling Project, a partnership between the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities (GCDD) and L'Arche Atlanta, and premiered in January 2021. Its title refers to the approximately 6,000 Georgians who were on the state's waiting list for developmental-disability waiver services when the film was made. 6,000 Waiting received First Prize in the Breaking Boundaries category at the Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival.
