Se trata de una comedia musical adscrita —a veces con intención peyorativa— al subgénero de la «españolada». Está basada en la obra de teatro homónima de Antonio Quintero y Pascual Guillén. Fue estrenada el 11 de abril de 1936 en el Cine Rialto de Madrid, pocos meses antes del desencadenamiento de la Guerra Civil.​ Fue el mayor éxito comercial del cine español hasta aquel momento y durante muchos años más.
