Elokuva perustuu Helvi Hämäläisen Tyhjä syli -nimiseen romaaniin vuodelta 1937, ja sen on käsikirjoittanut Arvi Kivimaa. Elokuva kertoo Elsasta (Kaisu Leppänen), joka tasapainoilee lapsettoman liiton ja uuden rakkauden välillä.
