Le film s'inspire de l'œuvre Il Novellino, publiée à titre posthume en 1476 et attribuée à Masuccio Salernitano : un recueil de nouvelles satiriques et grotesques qui faisait partie des livres interdits par les communautés ecclésiastiques.
