C.H.U.D. is a 1984 American science-fiction horror film directed by Douglas Cheek, from a screenplay by Parnell Hall, and starring John Heard, Daniel Stern, Kim Greist, and Christopher Curry in his film debut. The plot concerns a New York City police officer and a homeless shelter manager who team up to investigate a series of disappearances, and discover that the missing people have been killed by humanoid monsters that live in the sewers. The title of the movie is an abbreviation for "cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers". Produced independently and distributed by New World Pictures, the film was released in North America on August 31, 1984. It was a financial success, grossing $4.7 million from its $1.25 million budget. Though it received mixed reviews on initial release, C.H.U.D. has since developed a dedicated cult following.
