Hovedrollene spilles av Lu Qi (som Deng Xiaoping), Fu Xuecheng (som Liu Bocheng), Sun Feihu (som Chiang Kai-Shek) og Gu Yue (som Mao). Filmen fremstilling av de historiske forholdene regnes for å ligge nær opp til det som var det offisielle kinesisk synet på den tiden filmen ble produsert. Den ble kåret til beste film ved Hundred Flowers Awards (delt med The Days Without Lei Feng, Red River Valley og Da zhuan zhe: Ao zhan lu xi nan) og tildelt prisen for fremragende film ved Huabiao Awards (sammen med flere filmer).
