The 3D catalogue: film cases on wooden shelves, with the cat sitting at the counter next to its greeting.

The catalogue in 3D

The film shelves have a room of their own that you can walk around in. The cat behind the counter is the AI Catbot, and they pick real films from the same catalogue when you tell them what you feel like watching. Nothing is for sale, here or in there. Go in from here and this film is already out on the counter, with more like it waiting on the shelf next to it.

How it feels

This documentary uses only archival newsreels and propaganda films to show daily life in 1960s and 1970s Budapest. It focuses on ordinary moments like how people traveled, what they ate, and where they went for fun. The film is divided into five parts each covering a different aspect of city life.

What happens

A film öt, egyenként 15-20 perces részből áll: A pesti utca, A pesti lakás, A pesti divat, A pesti autó, A pesti bisztró. Az archív felvételek hol eredeti narrációval láthatók, hol pedig vendégszövegek mennek alattuk rádióhírek, politikai állásfoglalások, reklámszövegek stb. formájában, ezáltal újabb jelentésrétegekkel ruházva fel őket. A filmet vetítették fesztiválokon, televíziókban, és dvd-n is megjelent. A sorozat további részei: Budapest retró 2. (2003), Balaton retró (2007), Magyar retró (2010), Magyar retró 2.(2014), Magyar retró 3. (2018). (from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA)
