Romances de terre et d'eau est un film franco-brésilien réalisé par Jean-Pierre Duret et Andrea Santana, sorti en 2001 et en salles en France le 20 novembre 2002. Ce premier film de Duret et Santana inaugure une trilogie — avec Le Rêve de São Paulo (2005) et Puisque nous sommes nés (2009) — que les réalisateurs ont consacrée aux habitants du Nordeste brésilien, filmant leur misère, leur désarroi, mais également leur dignité, leur résistance, leurs rêves, leur poésie et la formidable pulsion de vie qui les anime. Filmant à deux, pendant de longues semaines, avec le souci constant de la "bonne distance" qui écarte d'emblée tout misérabilisme, ils visent dans leurs personnages, dans leur rapport à la terre, ce qui constitue l'Universel de la condition humaine.
