The film depicts Matt Sullivan, a San Francisco web designer who has chosen to abstain from any sexual contact for the duration of Lent. 40 Days and 40 Nights was released on March 1, 2002 by Miramax Films in the United States and by Universal Pictures (through United International Pictures) in other territories.
