The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec (French: Les Aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec), released as Adèle: Rise of the Mummy in Malaysia and Singapore, is a 2010 French fantasy adventure film written, produced and directed by Luc Besson. It is loosely based on the comic book series The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec by Jacques Tardi. Set in 1912 Paris, the film follows the eponymous journalist and adventurer, played by Louise Bourgoin, as she attempts to revive a mummified Egyptian physician to save her comatose sister, all while a pterosaur terrorizes the city. Mathieu Amalric, Gilles Lellouche, and Jean-Paul Rouve appear in supporting roles. The film blends elements of adventure, comedy, fantasy, and steampunk. The film premiered at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival on 9 April 2010 and was released theatrically in France on 14 April 2010. It was a commercial success in France, and grossed $34.1 million worldwide. Critical reception was generally positive, with praise for Bourgoin's performance, the film's visual style, and its faithful yet dynamic adaptation of Tardi's whimsical tone.
