Der Film basiert auf dem Roman Zuflucht hinter der Zeit der österreichischen Schriftstellerin Hannelore Valencak, der 1967 erschien und zehn Jahre später unter dem Titel Das Fenster zum Sommer neu aufgelegt wurde.
