Es basiert auf dem Roman Spieltrieb der deutschen Schriftstellerin Juli Zeh, der 2004 veröffentlicht wurde und vom Audio Verlag als Hörbuch umgesetzt wurde. Es handelt sich bei Spieltrieb nach Soloalbum, Die Wolke und Resturlaub um Schnitzlers vierte Kino-Romanadaption in Folge. Michelle Barthel übernahm bei dem Film erstmals eine Hauptrolle.
