What happens

The Angry Birds Movie is a 2016 animated comedy film based on the Angry Birds video game series. It was directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, written by Jon Vitti, and stars the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage. The film follows Red, an outcast on an island of flightless birds, as he suspects a newly arrived crew of green pigs of plotting an evil plan, and attempts to put a stop to them with the help of his newfound friends Chuck and Bomb. An Angry Birds film adaptation was announced in 2012, as franchise owner Rovio Entertainment had expressed interest in a film since 2010. In 2013, Sony Pictures won the distribution rights in an auction, Vitti was brought on as writer. Rovio produced and funded the film themselves while Sony Pictures Imageworks was the primary animation studio. The Angry Birds Movie is the most expensive Finnish film, as roughly €100 million was spent on the marketing and distribution. The Angry Birds Movie was released in the United States on May 20, 2016, by Sony Pictures Releasing through its Columbia Pictures label. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $352 million against a $73 million production budget, becoming the second highest-grossing film based on a video game. It was followed by two sequels: The Angry Birds Movie 2 in 2019 and The Angry Birds Movie 3 in 2026. (from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA)
