The Journey is a 2016 political drama film directed and produced by Nick Hamm, from a screenplay by Colin Bateman. The film is a fictional account of the true story of how political enemies Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness formed an unlikely political alliance in the lead up to the St Andrews Agreement. It stars Timothy Spall as Paisley and Colm Meaney as McGuinness, with Freddie Highmore, John Hurt, Toby Stephens, and Ian Beattie in supporting roles. An international co-production between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, the film premiered at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival as a Special Presentation. It was released theatrically in the UK and Ireland on May 5, 2017. It received mixed-to-positive critical reviews, though the performances of Spall and Meaney were widely praised.
