Nel passato era consuetudine che una coppia restasse unita per tutta la vita, oggi, la maggior parte delle relazioni non durano che pochi anni. Eppure, anche nella generazione dei nostri nonni, persone che spesso si conoscevano a malapena si sposavano e condividevano tutta la vita assieme. Nel documentario Die Nacht der Nächte, le registe Yasemin Şamdereli e Nesrin Şamdereli presentano quattro coppie che vivono assieme da oltre 55 anni: vi è una coppia indiana che ha infranto le regole del sistema delle caste, quindi una coppia giapponese costretta al matrimonio, quindi ancora una coppia del dopoguerra della regione della Ruhr in Germania e infine una coppia gay statunitense che è riuscita a sposarsi dopo decenni di fidanzamento.
