Скандал разразился после выхода на YouTube фильма-расследования Фонда борьбы с коррупцией Алексея Навального «Яхты, олигархи, девочки: охотница на мужчин разоблачает взяточника», основой для которого стал ряд постов Насти Рыбки в Instagram. Скандал характеризовался пристальным вниманием со стороны СМИ, назвавших его «Рыбкагейт», где суффикс -гейт отсылает к известному Уотергейтскому скандалу. Так, по итогам года по версии Colta.ru скандал назван одним из привлёкших наибольшее внимание медиа событий 2018 года, обогнавших с этой точки зрения, к примеру, участие Ксении Собчак в качестве кандидата в выборах президента России.
