Das Drehbuch von Daniela Baumgärtl und Constantin Lieb basiert auf dem 2001 veröffentlichten Roman Hauke Haiens Tod von Andrea Paluch und Robert Habeck nach der Novelle Der Schimmelreiter von Theodor Storm.
