Lo sceneggiato, liberamente tratto dall'omonimo romanzo storico di Robert Louis Stevenson, fu diretto da Anton Giulio Majano e trasmesso in sette puntate la domenica sera sul Programma Nazionale, dal 22 dicembre 1968 al 2 febbraio 1969. È stato uno degli sceneggiati di maggior successo della televisione italiana, definito « madre di tutti i teleromanzi »: l'amore tra i due protagonisti, e la lotta fra bene e male nell'Inghilterra del Quattrocento, hanno infatti appassionato generazioni di spettatori.
