Each episode focused on a different site in Israel, starting with a music video filmed at that location, followed by a guided tour from host Spi Ben-Yosef, sometimes accompanied by the character Yatzak and later a robot named Pitzi.

שביל באמצע שביל בצד הייתה תוכנית טיולים ששודרה בטלוויזיה החינוכית בין 1986 ל-1990. כל פרק התמקד באתר אחר בישראל. ראשיתו של הפרק בקליפ שצולם באותו אתר, בו הופיעו זמרים מתחלפים. בהמשך, סייר באתר ספי בן-יוסף, ונתן הסברים אודות האתר. לעיתים, נלווה אליו יאצק, דמות שגילם שלמה בר-אבא בפינת הטיולים של התוכנית "זהו זה!". בפרקים מאוחרים יותר התלווה ליאצק רובוט בשם פיצי. לעיתים נלוו לבן-יוסף שחקנים ובדרנים נוספים. בין הזמרים ששרו משיריהם בתוכנית: בני ברמן (בנחל עמוד), סי היימן (בנהר הירדן), עפרה חזה (בעין פשחה), ורדינה כהן (בנחל תנינים), אושיק לוי (בקיסריה), דורון מזר (בעכו), משינה (בממשית), ריטה ויזהר כהן (בירושלים), ירדנה ארזי סובב כנרת ועוד. שם התוכנית שאול מהשיר "שיר עם נקי" שכתב אהוד מנור והלחין וביצע מתי כספי. בשיר מתייחס הביטוי "שביל" לתסרוקות, אך בשם התוכנית המילה שביל משמשת במשמעותה כשביל ודרך, בה התוכנית סוקרת את האתרים והמקומות בארץ ישראל.
