In 1930s China, a Nationalist army unit sent to rescue a besieged intelligence officer finds her already saved by Communist New Fourth Army soldiers. Despite mutual suspicion and clashes, the two groups unite to fight the Japanese encirclement. After a series of battles, only the intelligence officer and one soldier survive.
