What happens
A Modern Cinderella è un cortometraggio muto del 1910. Il nome del regista non viene riportato nei credit del film. In un’ambientazione moderna, Cenerentola e la sorella Jane ricevono un invito a un ricevimento. Jane, vanitosa e concentrata solo sul proprio successo mondano, pregusta già l’idea di essere la più ammirata della serata. Cenerentola, invece, osserva il suo vestito semplice, il migliore tra i pochi che possiede, e capisce che potrà indossare solo quello o restare a casa. Jane le dice che, comunque, farebbe una brutta figura. Così Cenerentola decide di non andare. In quel momento entra Mrs. Marvin, un’anziana amica. Cenerentola, gentile e premurosa, la fa accomodare e le spiega il motivo degli abiti eleganti preparati da Jane. Quando l’anziana chiede se anche lei andrà al ricevimento, Cenerentola confessa di non avere nulla di adatto e di essere stata invitata a restare a casa. Mrs. Marvin, toccata dalla sua dolcezza, decide di aiutarla e, con discrezione, acquista per lei un abito completo, mandandola alla festa con la raccomandazione di rientrare entro la mezzanotte. Durante le danze Cenerentola perde una scarpetta, raccolta da un affascinante giovane che, colpito dalla sua grazia, cerca la proprietaria. La ritrova, ma lei nega che le appartenga e fugge allo scoccare della mezzanotte, lasciando intravedere una caviglia e un piede scalzo. Esaminando meglio la scarpa, il giovane scopre il nome del negozio e risale così all’acquirente: Mrs. Marvin, che è sua nonna.
