Tomando como base a obra teatral "Os Lobos: Tragédia Rústica em Três Actos" (1920) de Francisco Lage e João Corréa d'Oliveira, a longa-metragem tornou-se num dos maiores sucessos cinematográficos portugueses da década de 1920, chegando a ter difusão internacional e ser apontada como uma das principais influências para o estilo cinematográfico e a narrativa poética da "escola de cinema portuguesa" durante as décadas seguintes.
