Filmens handling er lagt til sluttfasen av den kinesiske borgerkrig. Rollen som Mao Zedong spilles av Gu Yue. Filmens fremstilling av de historiske forholdene regnes for å ligge nær opp til det som var det offisielle kinesisk synet på den tiden filmen ble produsert.
