Elokuvassa Jääskeläinen seuraa tutkimusmatkailija Sakari Pälsin käyttämää reittiä, jonka Pälsi teki vuosien 1916-1919 välisenä aikana tutkiakseen Siperiassa sijaitsevaa Tšukotkan aluetta sekä siellä asuvia ihmisiä. Elokuvan taustamateriaaleina on käytetty Pälsin matkalta laatimia kirjeitä ja muistiinpanoja sekä hänen kuvaamaansa elokuvaa Arktisia matkakuvia (1917), jonka materiaalia yhdistetään Jääskeläisen kuvaamiin kohtauksiin.
