Käsikirjoituksen on tehnyt Mika Waltari omien romaaniensa Vieras mies tuli taloon (1937) ja sen jatko-osan Jälkinäytös (1938) pohjalta. Kun Waltarin romaania Vieras mies tuli taloon paheksuttiin, hän kirjoitti sille jatko-osan, jossa tilanne korjaantui.
