What happens

Sysmäläinen on vuonna 1938 ensi-iltaan tullut Valentin Vaalan ohjaama historiallis-romanttinen komediaelokuva. Se perustuu Jalmari Finnen samannimiseen historialliseen romaaniin vuodelta 1910. Elokuva kertoo 1600-luvulla eläneestä sysmäläisestä aatelismiehestä Arvid Tandefeltistä. Päähenkilö joutuu lapsena pakkonaimisiin Brita-neidin kanssa. Kolmikymmenvuotisesta sodasta palattuaan hän ei enää tunnista vaimoaan, vaan yrittää ensin vietellä tämän ja erehtyy sitten palkkamaan pojaksi pukeutuneen vaimonsa rengikseen. Elokuvan pääosissa esiintyvät Olavi Reimas ja lupaava näyttelijä Sirkka Sari, joka kuoli tapaturmaisesti seuraavana vuonna. Ulkokuvaukset tehtiin Heinolassa Lusin kylässä sekä Ruotsalainen-järven rannalla kesällä 1938. Lisäksi kuvattiin romaanin tapahtumaympäristöissä Vihdin Olkkalassa ja Sysmän Rapalassa.
