Filmen illustrerer hjemmebagning af rugbrød, som det foregik i gamle dage på danske bondegårde. Rugen males, og dejen lægges aftenen før bagningen; melet æltes i et stor dejtrug, og surdej fra forrige bagning tilsættes.
